North Harris Studio is the creative home of artist Sam Gare, exploring the natural world through art, science and storytelling. From the lives of other species to the stories held within landscapes, her work invites us to look closer, deepen our understanding and reconnect with the natural world.
At heart, I’m a storyteller...
I'm drawn to the stories of the natural world, from the lives and behaviours of other species to the folklore, histories and hidden connections held within landscapes. Through North Harris Studio, I bring these stories to life through art, illustration, writing, film and other creative forms, finding the medium that best captures each story and invites others to connect with it.
I'm curious about the world around us and the many ways we come to understand it. Research, science, folklore and local knowledge all help me look deeper and uncover new perspectives. I enjoy working with scientists, communities and others who share a curiosity about the places and species that surround us.
Looking after the environment is an important part of my practice. Wherever possible, I use reclaimed, recycled and sustainable materials, because I believe the way we make art should reflect the values behind it.
Above all, I hope my work encourages people to slow down, look a little closer and reconnect with the natural world, discovering new stories, seeing familiar things differently and finding a deeper connection with the living world around us.
