Whale Stories and Sea Ribbons

Contribute to a collective remembrance by sharing a memory, encounter, or folklore about whales—or submit a message to the whales or the sea through our ‘Sea Ribbons’.

We’re gathering stories, memories, and folklore about whales—past and present.

Were you affected by the mass stranding of 55 long-finned pilot whales on Traigh Mhor Beach in July 2023? Do you have stories of other strandings, whale encounters, or local traditions, songs, and folklore?

We invite you to share your voice.

What we’re looking for:
First-hand memories of the 16 July 2023 stranding
Whale encounters, past or present
Stories, songs, or folklore about whales in local tradition.

CALL FOR STORIES

SEA RIBBONS

Send a message to the whales.

These messages—words of remembrance, gratitude, sorrow, or hope—will be written on ribbons and tied to a wooden mould used to shape the whale sand sculptures. On the day of the memorial, the artwork will be carried to the beach, bringing your voice to the shore and offering it to the sea as part of this collective act of remembrance.

After the event, all the Sea Ribbon messages will be gathered and embroidered onto a large piece of fabric—each one becoming a lasting thread in a shared tapestry of remembrance and reflection.
